    Tietze syndrome, also called costo-chondritis is an inflammatory condition of the cartilage which joins the breastbone to the rib. The condition results in sharp pain in the costo-sternal joints. Pain caused by Tietze syndrome imitates pain of a heart attack. Tietze syndrome is also known as chest wall pain, costo-sternal syndrome and costosternal chondrodynia.

    Tietze Syndrome Causes


    Tietze syndrome does not have a clear cause. However, these are the commonly seen triggers from the condition:

    Trauma or injury to the chest is a significant cause
    Strenuous exercise and lifting weights is linked to Tietze syndrome.
    Respiratory illnesses and infections that cause excessive coughing
    Infection of the costo-sternal joint
    Pain and swelling of the costo-chondral could be a sign of fibromyalgia.
    Occasionally, pain signals get misconstrued by the brain, resulting in pain in parts that are far away from the actual problem. Thus, spinal pain may be seen as chest pain.

    Tietze Syndrome Symptoms


    Common manifestations of the Tietze syndrome are:

    Pain at that part on the chest where the rib connects with the sternum (breastbone), i.e. the costo-sternal joint.
    The pain may be either sharp and agonizing or dull and nagging
    Usually, the pain is seen on the left side of breastbone, although, it could occur on either side
    Sharp, severe pain when taking a deep breath
    Pain on coughing
    Breathing may be labored

    Tietze Syndrome Treatment


    There is no specific treatment for Tietze syndrome. Symptomatic treatment is recommended to manage the pain and swelling. To lessen the pain, inflammation and distress, the doctor may recommend:

    Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); they diminish inflammation and swelling significantly and relieve pain and tenderness.

    Your doctor will prescribe anti depressants and muscle relaxants as well.

    Rest is very crucial. Steer clear of activities that worsen your pain.

    Physiotherapy and gentle exercises, such as walking and swimming improve your range of movement and fortify your mood. On the other hand, stop exercising if your pain aggravates.

    Warm application helps immensely. Apply heat to the painful part several times a day.

    Continue to follow these self care measures even after the pain has subsided. Little by little work your way back to your normal schedule.

    Certain foods promise substantial relief from the symptoms of Tietze syndrome too. Add ginger and garlic to your daily menu. The two herbs fight inflammation successfully and dispel pain almost immediately.

    Aromatherapy essential oils decrease the pain and discomfort caused due to the inflammatory process. Nonetheless, ensure that you visit a good masseur. Essential oils such as Clove, Nutmeg and Lavender are especially valuable. These oils relax the muscles, lessen pain and reduce swelling. Blend one of the essential oils with a carrier oil like coconut oil or olive oil and use for massage.
